Monitoring UN Corruption Convention

Transparency International (TI), the global anti-corruption initiative, proposes establishing an independent board of experts to monitor the UN Convention against Corruption. Its members should be outstanding experts from academia, business, civil society and governments around the world. The board would advise and support the biennial Conference of States Parties (CoSP) as well as the managing Secretariat. At the next CoSP in January 2008, the participating states plan to decide on a review mechanism for the UN convention. According to TI, an independent board of experts would strengthen the process and thus enhance credibility. Country reviews should be carried out by regional experts selected by the secretariat in consultation with the new Board, TI argues. The UN Convention against Corruption has been in force since December 2005. (ell)
